Course Information
Introduction to Concepts and Application of Principles
The concepts and principles associated with movement system impairments (MSI) and their role in mechanical musculoskeletal pain syndromes will be presented. This course will enable the clinician to discuss the concept of segmental directional susceptibility to movement and the tissue adaptations that are associated with repeated movements and prolonged postures. The course provides instruction in identifying impairments in alignment, muscle length, strength, stiffness, performance and pattern of movement and their relationship to MSI syndromes. The signs and symptoms of movement impairment syndromes will be described. The course will provide instruction in the examination methods used to identify movement system impairments, which include 1) movement testing, 2) alignment assessments, 3) tests of muscle length, 4) tests of muscle strength, and 5) analysis of movement patterns during both specific joint motions and functional activities. Discussion will focus on the importance and means of developing a precise therapeutic exercise program and correcting impairments in alignment and movement patterns as well as in the performance of functional activities.

The course will cover movement impairments of the shoulder, trunk, and hip. The program will include demonstrations of examinations, selection of corrective exercises, and performance of therapeutic exercises.

Course Objectives
  1. Describe the concepts and principles of movement system impairment syndromes
  2. Describe the physiological mechanisms affecting muscle length, strength, and stiffness as well the clinical application of these properties
  3. Describe the concepts of relative flexibility, a segmental directional susceptibility to movement and the importance of changes in the precision of movement
  4. Describe the relationship between alignment and muscle impairments
  5. Recognize impaired patterns of movement and muscle recruitment
  6. Recognize movement impairment syndromes associated with painful conditions of the spine, hip and shoulder
  7. Describe the muscle length and performance tests required to identify factors contributing to impairment syndromes
  8. Describe the examination to diagnosis movement system impairment syndromes of the low back, hip, and shoulder and the contributing factors
  9. Develop a corrective exercise program based on the results of the examination
