Letter from APTA President: Combined Sections Meeting (CSM)

I have recently returned from the most successful Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) in APTA’s history, and all I can say is WOW.

The show floor and meeting rooms were filled with a buzz and excitement not often seen. It is difficult to describe the pride I felt as I walked the floor, shoulder-to-shoulder with so many of my peers - thousands of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students who gathered to share ideas, connect with colleagues, and move our profession forward. Despite the tough economic times our country is facing, this year’s CSM in Las Vegas, Feb. 9-13, broke all previous records – with nearly 8,400 attendees and almost 600 exhibit booths. This unprecedented success was a sign to me that, whatever our obstacles, as a profession we are committed to continually improving, advancing and growing.

Those of you who were in attendance at CSM will understand what I mean when I say the energy in the air was palpable. There was an incredible array of cutting-edge programming, networking opportunities, and an exhibit hall filled with products and services to keep all physical therapy professionals current. The Section Program chairs did a marvelous job of putting together this great programming! In addition, we launched our new comprehensive brand campaign, "Move Forward: Physical Therapy Brings Motion to Life," one of the many highlights of CSM ’09.

Experiencing such a fantastic event, surrounded by so many with like interests and aspirations, leaves you with a certain high; a
renewed zest and vigor for the profession. You head home feeling great about what you do and ready to take on the world. And, while CSM is over for another year, there is yet another opportunity in 2009 to capture that energy and keep the momentum going. I invite you to join me in Baltimore, June 10-13, for PT 2009, where you can refresh and energize your spirit, your connections, and your knowledge. PT 2009 is the national event for physical therapy – featuring:

  • 19 tracks of advanced programming, including six tracks of CES (Concentrated Education Series)
  • National and internationally renowned speakers
  • Invigorating conversations at Opening Ceremonies, the Oxford Debate, Coffee with the Stars, the poster hall, and many receptions
  • Mentoring opportunities at The Next Step! Student Mentoring Reception
  • The newest technology, products, and services in APTA’s Exhibit Hall
  • And much more. For more information on PT 2009, please visit our Web site.

As the great American industrialist Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success." During these challenging times, let’s continue to work toward success by joining together to grow not only as individuals, but also as a profession. I hope to see you in June in Baltimore.

Yours sincerely,
R Scott Ward, PT, PhD
President
