July 2007 Posting
Aloha HAPTA members,

On July 12, 2005 , both the House and Senate voted to overturn Gov Lingle's veto of SB1808CD1. What this means is that we are now back to the Work Comp system we knew. ODG and ACOEM no longer apply. The old rules do.

You can read SB1808CD1 here.

In this attached slide from the presentation by Lawrence W. Boyd, Ph. D. Labor Economist to the House Labor Committee WC briefing in June, the key point made is that, according to the DLIR and Insurance Commissioner's own numbers, slowly rising total benefit costs (including medical) DO NOT account for the rapid increase in Premiums. The real reason the premiums are going up so fast is currently unknown, but it is NOT the providers!!!

For the full report by Dr Boyd click here

HAPTA will be working with the HealthCare Council and Legislature to draft bills for next year to address problems within the current WC system. We do see many areas where the system could be more efficient, user friendly, and most importantly, less adversarial.

Please feel free to contact us with any suggestions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,
Graham Hadley
