News Legislative Committee Spring Conference Report April 2008 HAPTA’s Spring Conference was a great success. Sixty-two PT’s/PTA’s showed up to take Shirley Sahrmann’s Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement System Impairment Syndromes. Shirley wowed the crowd with her extensive knowledge and experience, as well as entertaining us with her vibrant sense of humor. Many thanks go to Bianca Hoang and Michelle Garcia, our dynamic two-woman Continuing Education team. Our HAPTA spring business meeting was held at lunchtime on the first day of the course. New board members were introduced and reports were given. Ed Ho, PTA Caucus Representative and Liaison to the State Board of Physical Therapy, updated us on HAPTA’s Strategic Plan. Lisa Curtis, our Public Relations Chair, gave an informative presentation Sunday morning on APTA’s Core Values. Lisa welcomes your help with public relations events; she can be contacted at lisa.c.curtis@gmail.com. HAPTA looks forward to offering other great continuing education opportunities here in Hawaii. We welcome your help—with ideas, planning, and yes, simple little tasks like helping with course registration, mailing flyers, and making phone calls. To help out, please contact bhoangpt@gmail.com. See you all at the next event!
Legislative Committee This legislative year has been quieter than most, however your legislative committee was hard at work in testifying for improved health care, fairer treatment of injured workers and help to PT students who wish to practice in Hawaii. Session is now finished for the year. Here is a mini recap of activities: We have testified at 7 hearings in the House and 4 in the Senate. These include: 1. Work Comp issues such ensuring that patients have the right to have their own physician decide when they are well enough to return to work, and the requirement of employers to continue medical services to an injured employee despite disputes. 2. Women’s Health issues included the requirement at least 6 months post-partum and interconception care for women who participate in the Hawaii QUEST health insurance program, and cervical and breast screening for the uninsured. 3. General Practice issues supported a bill to have the UH adopt a loan forgiveness program for PT students enrolled in mainland colleges who return to Hawaii to practice. We are open to all with an interest in using our political clout as an organization to improve healthcare in Hawaii and continue to meet monthly with our legislative consultant. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 13th at 7:30 pm. Please email me for the location. Please join us, and let our voices be heard!
